Resource of the Month – Story Box Library

Resource of the Month – Story Box Library

Resource of the Month – August 2022: Story Box Library!

Have you discovered StoryBox Library yet? It is one of our favourite online resources and one that we constantly recommend to Myli members.

What is StoryBox Library?

StoryBox Library (SBL) describes itself as an ‘online reading room’. It’s a place where the wonderful world of Children’s Literature is on permanent exhibit, and children can connect, engage and be inspired when they watch a range of celebrated stories read aloud by wonderfully engaging storytellers.

Story Box Library provides a rich, interactive experience via a diverse range of everyday storytellers – actors, comedians, sports people, musicians, artists, authors, and children – with varying accents and from different cultures, each sharing past and present book titles. The result is meaningful, entertaining readings focusing on teller and tale.

Is SBL suitable for all children?

Most stories on SBL have been selected with pre-school and primary school-aged children in mind. However, you’ll also find stories suitable for older and younger children. To assist with story selection, stories are broken down into age categories;

  • Pre-school (3 – 5 yrs)
  • Lower Primary (5 – 7 yrs)
  • Middle Primary (8 – 10 yrs)
  • Upper Primary (10 – 12 yrs)

Additionally, stories can be used with children aged 12+

SBL Features –

  • Each story comes with tailored Classroom Ideas and Activity Time that are specifically created for the Australian Curriculum, further connecting children to the themes of each story.
  • Storytellers are chosen to ensure a broad range of voices, ages, gender and backgrounds to ensure diversity.
  • Regularly add new stories, currently 40-60 each year.
  • Free from advertising
  • Closed captions
  • A selection of AUSLAN StoryTime readings.
  • Select stories by Storyteller

Sleep With Kip series –

Released by Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI), the ‘Sleep with Kip’ series promotes sleep and good bedtime habits for all families. Using evidence-based strategies developed over 20 years, MCRI has created six children’s books, each designed as a fun and friendly way to learn to manage common sleep problems in children, with benefits for parents alike.

Themes

Story Box Library features a curated selection of themes, including Diversity, Resilience, CBCA Shortlisted titles, Grief & Loss, Starting School, Awareness events, Friendships and more. You can also select stories based on the author, illustrator, publisher and reading challenges. You’ll find these features located on the left-hand side of the webpage.

How do I access Story Box Library?

All you need is an active Myli library membership and an internet connection! Access through your browser here or the app is available for mobiles and tablets from both the Apple and Google Play stores.

When you log in, you’ll need to select ‘Library Access’ and ‘Myli – My Community Library’ in the dropdown list. Enter your library card number and password, and enjoy!

Videos are watched on-demand so borrowing limits do not apply. Stories cannot be downloaded for offline viewing.
