Held annually on February 14th, Library Lovers’ Day is a celebration that honours libraries, librarians and library lovers and encourages us to reflect on the valuable roles that libraries play in our lives. Libraries have become more than just a place to read books and Library Lovers’ Day encourages regular users to highlight what they love about their libraries, while also drawing attention to the facilities for those who may not frequent libraries regularly.
Originating at the State Library of New South Wales (NSW) in 2006, Library Lovers’ Day gained national recognition when the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) joined the campaign to promote their passion for books. Library Lovers’ Day is now observed internationally and has become an important event in libraries across the globe.
On Library Lovers’ Day, library branches are encouraged to create displays and host themed events and programs to acknowledge the day and bring awareness to their communities. We also encourage all of our patrons to spend some time in the library, check out our Library Lovers’ Day displays and partake in our book-related activities.
Our Warragul Library has created a ‘Blind Date with a Book’ display that will be running from now until Library Lovers’ Day on February 14. A ‘Blind Date with a Book’ involves selecting a book wrapped in plain paper, concealing its title and cover, with only a brief description. This encourages library lovers to explore new genres or authors.
Similarly, Wonthaggi Library will be hosting a ‘Speed Dating’ session from 9AM – 5PM on Library Lovers’ Day, with scones and coffee being served between 2PM – 3PM on the day. The ‘Speed Dating’ session shares the same goal as the ‘Blind Date with a Book’ aiming to inspire exploration and discovery of new genres and authors.
